An epic battle hit Mountain View Middle School recently, and three teams survived the Battle of the Books challenge! Students at the school were asked to read five books; The Hunger Games, Tale of Despereaux, Loser, Life As We Knew It, and The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Then, students participated in a Jeopardy style game with questions about the books to compete for prizes.
A total of 10 teams (each with three students) filled out a questionnaire of Jeopardy style questions. The final round came down to three teams battling it out in a live quiz show style competition. On the final question, the Burger Boys team composed of Andrew Heslop, Joseph James, and Hunter Bailey correctly answered the three ancient rules of mice from The Tale of Despereaux, and wagered 1,500 points to win first place and Samsung ChromeBooks. The other two teams correctly answered two out of the three questions, but ended with negative points in the final round. The Booking and Checking team, which included members Cohen Kloster, Britton Landry, and Hunter Casillas, wagered 600 points, which resulted in a third place finish and a bluetooth headphones prize. The Holy Cows team made up of Makinlee Dooley, Kallie Heslop, and Audelia Hunter wagered 100 points earning them second place and a new Kindle for each of them.
Students from Ms. Ortiz’s Language Arts class helped with scorekeeping, judging, and technical support. While, ELA Teacher Mr. Gurule, worked with Innovative Investment Professionals to purchase prizes and shirts for students. Lisa Schultz served as the head judge for the competition and Jasmin O’Brien, the MVMS Librarian, was the announcer and coordinator for the Battle of the Books event.
Great job Mountain View Middle School, we love seeing creative ways to encourage reading and reading comprehension … plus, everyone loves a good healthy competition!
